Lauren Golen, RYT is the co-owner and a certified Bikram Yoga Teacher at BYDB. I started practicing yoga in 1996 in a very difficult time in my life, in the middle of a struggle with depression and an eating disorder, yoga began to open up my eyes to a place where there was hope. I began to do the work on the mat that began to work on the rest of my life. I fell in love with the practice of yoga. Soon after, I began to go to every workshop that I could. I learned something new from every teacher, every workshop and saw the connection between the experience I was having on my mat and what went on in my life. I decided to "go for it" and become a teacher. I began my journey of teaching in 1999 and sharing the gift of yoga. I am certified in Ashtanga, Vinyasa and Bikram and have gained a tremendous wealth of knowledge from all styles of yoga. I love that my practice changes everyday and that I have the ability to see inside of myself every time I come to the mat. My passion and purpose is to inspire others to feel their best and discover and live their true purpose. Love and Light ;-)
Jon is the co-owner of BYDB and has been a Certified Bikram Teacher since 2004. I love to see people change in their bodies, their health and their overall happiness. I love to have fun when I teach and make people laugh. The yoga is always a challenge for me, but I know that going through this experience with my practice everyday and coming out on the other side is what allows me to grow and feel amazing. Struggle harder and Don't Give Up!
I was born and grew up in Philadelphia. I have always loved sports. I was very active growing up and played baseball all the way up through the collegiate level.
After college, I began working in the legal industry and stopped paying as much attention to my health as I had in the past. By the end of 2010, I knew that I needed to make some changes and to take better care of myself. I decided that I would give yoga a try.
Initially, I began practicing other styles of yoga. I found out pretty quickly that yoga involved a lot more than stretching, incense, and chanting. Somebody in one of my classes suggested that I try Bikram Yoga. All I knew about Bikram Yoga at the time was that it was the "hot" yoga. Never one to back down from a challenge, I attended my first class at 6:00 a.m. with Jon. I sweated more than I thought was humanly possible that morning. Very quickly I started to see the benefits that the teachers talked about during class becoming realities in my life. As a lifelong asthma sufferer, I had used inhalers for more than twenty years to regulate my breathing. After only nine months of consistent practice I was able to discontinue using my inhalers completely. I also lost about thirty pounds my first year of practicing.
After about a year, and with a lot of encouragement from Lauren and Jon, and many of the other students at the studio, I went to Los Angeles and attended Teacher Training in the fall of 2012.
I believe strongly that this yoga can have tremendous benefits for anyone willing to practice consistently, and I am so grateful to be a part of the awesome community at the studio!
I was tricked into taking my first Bikram class, my friend told me it was an 'easy, half-hour beginner's class.' After 90 minutes of the hottest workout I have had I was hooked. I had to figure out how to get this yoga into my life permanently, so I decided to go to teacher training after 2 classes. I was certified in the spring of 2003 and have taught in New Hampshire, California, and sunny Florida. This yoga has not only kept me in good working condition physically, I like to think that it tightens up all those 'loose screws' we all seem to get once in a while. Hope to see you at the studio soon!
